The Obama’s Make Their Graduation Rounds

Barack Obama

Congratulation to all the 2013 graduates! It is commencement season and it is always a competition among the top universities of who will have the best keynote speaker. A few schools have won what many consider the top honor. President and First Lady Obama are probably the most sought after speakers. Morehouse College, Ohio State University, and the Naval Academy received bragging rights this year for hosting President Barack Obama.

I was ecstatic to hear he would be addressing the men of Morehouse College this past Sunday. As an HBCU grad, I am definitely biased! I was on YouTube as soon as I thought it might be over looking for a video. He quoted former Morehouse president Benjamin Mays about what being a “Morehouse Man” meant:

“Benjamin Mays, who served as the president of Morehouse for almost 30 years, understood that tradition perhaps more than anyone. He said, ‘It will not be sufficient for Morehouse, or any college, for that matter, to produce clever graduates… but rather honest men, men who can be trusted in public and private life; men who are sensitive to the wrongs, the sufferings, and the injustices of society and who are willing to accept responsibility for correcting those ills.”

The President addressed Ohio State University earlier this month and is set to address the Naval Academy later this week.

First Lady Michelle Obama delivered the commencement speeches at Bowie State University (HBCU!), Eastern Kentucky University, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Magnet High School in Nashville.

I know those high school students fell out of their chair when the realized the First Lady would be at their graduation! I don’t even remember who spoke at my high school graduation. She informed the high school graduates that it was okay to fail. In order to understand the success you are achieving, you must first experience failure.

“When something doesn’t go your way, you’ve just got to adjust. You’ve got to dig deep and work like crazy, and that’s when you’ll find out what you’re really made of during those hard times, but you can only do that if you’re willing to put yourself in a position where you might fail, and that’s why so often, failure is the key to success for so many great people.”

I will never forget my own college graduation. S/O to the class of 2007 at Howard University and our commencement speaker, OPRAH WINFREY!! (We won!)
