Jay-Z & Beyonce Catch Heat For Visiting Cuba

Jay-Z and Beyonce In Cuba

Last week, Jay-Z and Beyonce celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary by visiting Cuba with their moms. What should have been a little blog post with a few pictures and a blurb or two about the trip has become so much bigger!

Florida representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart penned a letter to the director of the United States’ Office of Foreign Assets Control, Adam Szubin. They asked for more information on the licenses that the Carter’s received to grant them entry to Cuba.

A portion of the letter reads:

We would like to respectfully request, within all applicable rules and guidelines, information regarding the type of licence that Beyoncé and Jay-Z received, for what purpose, and who approved such travel.

If these individuals were given people-to-people licenses, we would like to bring to your attention the Cuba Travel Advisory issued by OFAC on July 25, 2011 which states, ‘OFAC only licenses People-to-People Groups that certify that all participants will have a full-time schedule of educational exchange activities that will result in meaningful interaction between the travelers and individuals in Cuba.’

US dollars spent on Cuban tourism directly fund the machinery of oppression that brutally represses the Cuban people.

The United States currently does not allow US tourism in Cuba. For 53 years, a trade embargo has prohibited all US tourism there. Where some people can fly under the radar, clearly Jay-Z and Beyonce can not. So it was no surprised when the reason for their visit was questioned. Special licenses are granted for academic, religious, our journalistic reasons. What reason did the Carter’s give and who approved it?

Anti-Castro groups are also attacking the couple for being insensitive in picking the destination. Cuba is known for rampant racism against the Afro-Cuban community. There is even a strong accusation in the air that the visit being approved has something to do with the close friendship between the Carter’s and the Obama’s. I’m not sure if who approves licenses and reasons for them are public information, but this may be something we never find out.

Beyonce and Jay-Z’s camps have yet to release an official statement.
