HARRIET TUBMAN RECEIVES NATIONAL MONUMENT

Harriet Tubman

Today (Mar. 25), President Barack Obama is set to announce five new national monuments and abolitionist Harriet Tubman is on the list! A national monument, located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, will receive the designation of a National Park. The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument will be the first national monument commemorating an African-American woman.

Tubman is credited with having helped more than 70 slaves escape to freedom using the Underground Railroad. The monument will be located on land she worked on as a slave. This announcement also marks the 100th anniversary of her death.

The $21 million new park is slated to open in 2015 and will include gardens, walking trails, and a visitor’s center. It will be on the 125 mile stretch of road called the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. Along with the park, this will include more than 30 stops dedicated to Harriet Tubman’s life as an abolitionist. The Mason-Dixon line will be featured, along with a one-room school and a store with artifacts from the 1800s.

Thank you Mr. President! He has really used his second term in office to honor important African-Americans in our history. Last month, President Obama dedicated a new statue of Rosa Parks in the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall, the first black woman to receive the honor.

The other places being named National Parks include Delaware’s First State National Monument, Ohio’s Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument, the Río Grande del Norte National Monument in New Mexico, and the San Juan Islands National Monument in Washington State.
