Thursday afternoon, Essence Magazine held their Sixth Annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon.  The honorees this year included Oprah Winfrey, Gabrielle Union, Quvenzhané Wallis, and actress Naomie Harris.

Oprah was honored and received the Power Award for all of her past achievements but more recently the launch of her network OWN and celebrating the first graduating class of women from her school in Africa.

When accepting her award, Oprah said: “There’s nothing better than being honored by your own.”

Another honoree was Quvenzhané Wallis.  She’s the youngest actress to ever be nominated for an Academy Award.  She’s nine-years-old.  With the Oscars just a few days away, everyone jumped at the chance to get a picture with the young star.

Gabrielle Union was presented with the Fierce and Fearless award and had the crowd in tears during her acceptance speech.  Gabrielle’s speech went something like this:

“We live in a town that rewards pretending, and I have been pretending to be fierce and fearless for a very long time. I was a victim, masquerading as a survivor. I stayed when I should have run. I was quiet when I should have spoken up and I turned a blind eye to injustice instead of having the courage to stand up for what”s right.”

The Shining Star Award was given to Namie Harris from the movie “Skyfall.”   Also, Alfre Woodard, who was the mistress of ceremonies, and writer Mara Brock Akil were honored and each of them took a moment to reflect on their career paths during the ceremony.

Miguel was also on hand to serenade all the ladies.

There were so many celebrities that came out to support these ladies and Essence.  See pictures from the luncheon below:
